Friends,

I want to let you know of a horrible attempt at scamming out there.

I've been victim of an attempted scam, claiming to be from "Intuit Quickbooks."  Ostensibly, the caller claims that my payment for support services is overdue.  They have the user (me) download a utility which gives them control of my computer.  This differed completely from the support I have received in the past as Intuit never took control of my computer.  I ended the connection and deleted the ap the instant I saw the scammer had control.

Seething with rage I contacted Intuit to alert them to this.  Predictably the response was, in essence, "Thanks, we're looking into it."  In that conversation I learned a couple of things worth sharing, I believe:
  • Intuit doesn't bill separately for support services.  That is included in the annual fee.  This can be confirmed with a direct phone call to Intuit's account services number.

  • Intuit will never - and I emphasize NEVER - take total control of a PC remotely.  That alone should have been a huge alarm to me, however it took a few moments for me see what was taking place and to 'pull the plug' on this connection. Which I accomplished by disconnecting from the internet for an afternoon.

  • Once the scammer learns that the individual they call has Quickbooks, they do not stop calling.  Their first contact with me was on 12/30 of last year.  I've kept a record, and they've called roughly twice a week since then.  I've insisted that they refrain from further calls, however that hasn't helped, and they still continue.  I haven't received another since Jan 28 so maybe they got the message.
So for those of you using any variant of Quickbooks, be warned.

sincerely,
Ken Wagoner, SET
