Ed,
The appendix of NFPA13R, 2019 has this that may clear things up for you.
A.6.6.5
An example of an open or exterior corridor, stair, or breezeway is one that is
exposed to the outside atmosphere (temperature). Another example is an exterior
wraparound corridor that is typical in a two- to three-story motel.

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] 13R Breezeways

Our part of the world will soon be transitioning to the 2019 edition of 13R,
and in some cases, an even newer one. One of the changes is in section 6.6.5
part (7) where it says "Corridors that are open to the outside atmosphere and
are separated from the exit stairwell". In the 2022 edition, this is revised
again to read "Corridors that are not part of a means of egress". The 2022
edition also has a new section 6.6.5.2 that says "Sprinkler protection shall be
provided for corridors and balconies that are part of a means of egress."

We're seeing more and more of these: 3-story 13R apartment building with 1 or
more breezeways. Breezeways are open on each end, combustible construction,
and have open stairs from 1st to 3rd floors. The ceiling of the 3rd level is
smooth/flat gyp board. The ceiling of the 1st and 2nd levels are exposed wood
joists. I assume the breezeway/stairs are part of the means of egress. Our
area is subject to freezing.

Is an open breezeway a corridor? IBC's definition of corridor says it's
enclosed. If it's not a corridor then we don't have to sprinkler it because it
falls in the "other similar features" category of section 6.6.5, right?
Really curious how other jurisdictions are interpreting this.

I appreciate your insight!
Ed
