Raw Water Source

"A well water source has been tested and it has no sediment. Is water from a
well
considered a raw water source thus requiring return bends for drops?"

We have reviewed 2013 edition of NFPA 13 and 13R as the applicable standards.
Our
informal interpretation is that water from a well that is a closed type system
would
not require return bends for drops.

The water from the well is not treated and can in a sense be considered a raw
water
source. However, the intent of NFPA 13 is to prevent the accumulation of
sediment
in drops of a system. Water wells that are closed systems contain little to no
sediment
since the earth is a filter and many are considered potable drinking water
supplies.
The water has been tested where no sediment was found thus there is no
requirement
for return bends on the sprinkler system. The open well types create a larger
concern
where it would be considered no different from a pond or open-top reservoir.
Return
bends would be required for rivers, ponds, open-top reservoirs, and open-top
wells
where they could contain excessive sediment. New definitions are now in the
standard
for raw water source. Section 3.3.19 of NFPA 13 indicates that a raw water
source
is a water supply that has not been treated and could contain foreign material
that
could enter the sprinkler system. The annex for this section clarifies examples
of raw water sources as millponds, lakes, streams, open-top reservoirs, and so
forth.
Examples of non-raw water sources can include city water supplies, cisterns,
pressure
tanks, gravity tanks, break tanks, aquifers, and so forth. Water sources that
are
closed or protected from direct contact with the environment should not be
considered
raw. NFPA 13R in Section 3.3.8 has a slight variation in wording for a raw water
source as a water supply taken from the environment that has not been treated
and
could contain foreign material that could accumulate freely and enter the
sprinkler
system. The annex in NFPA 13R is the same wording as NFPA 13. This should
clarify
when return bends are needed for sprinkler systems. On a side note, NFPA 13 also
added a new Section as 8.15.19.5 that return bends shall not be required for
wet
pipe systems where sprinklers with a nominal K-factor of K-11.2 or larger are
used.
