A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues

NFPA 13 - Shadowing
There were several proposals and comments during the development of the 2013
editions
of NFPA 13, NFPA 13D, and NFPA 13R for allowable shadow areas. Shadow areas are
areas not covered by the spray pattern of a sprinkler due to the presence of
obstructions.
The proposals and comments were aimed at establishing an area limit for portions
of the floor that are not covered by the sprinkler spray pattern due to these
obstructions.
The technical committees for these standards handled this concept differently.
NFPA
13 has multiple sprinkler obstruction rules in place such as the "Three Times
Rule"
and the "Four Times Rule," that provide spacing criteria from certain
obstructions.
These rules essentially allow dry areas where obstructions prevent sprinkler
discharge
from reaching certain areas of the floor. The presence of these obstruction
rules
in NFPA 13 prompted the technical committee to reject all the proposals
regarding
shadowing. NFPA 13R and NFPA 13D differed where there are specific floor areas
that
can remain unprotected and also includes a definition of shadow areas. A future
Technical Update will address these changes.

The new material added in the 2013 edition of NFPA 13 is A.8.1.1(3) where it
states,
"Not withstanding the obstruction rules provided in Chapter 8, it is not
intended
or expected that water will fall on the entire floor space of the occupancy.
When
obstructions or architectural features interfere with the sprinkler's spray
pattern,
such as columns, angled walls, wing walls, slightly indented walls, and various
soffit configurations, shadowed areas can occur. Where small shadowed areas are
formed on the floor adjacent to their referenced architectural features, these
shadowed
areas are purely on paper and do not take into account the dynamic variables of
sprinkler discharge. Examples of shadow areas are shown in Figure A.8.1.1(3)(a)
and Figure A.8.1.1(3)(b)" (of NFPA 13). The 2010 edition of NFPA 13 did address
this issue for the applicable type of sprinkler in A.8.6.5.2.1.3, A.8.8.5.2.1.3,
 A.8.9.5.2.1.3, A.8.10.6.2.1.3, A.8.10.7.2.1.3, and A.8.11.5.2.1.3. The existing
annex material was carried into the 2013 edition. Thus the concern for
shadowing
of sprinkler discharge is addressed when following the obstruction rules of NFPA
 13.
