AFSA Technical Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A newsletter dealing with codes and other technical issues September 12, 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Control Valve for In-rack Sprinklers "I have an existing warehouse with two existing roof sprinkler systems #1 and #2. The owner is installing new rack storage under system #2 that requires over 40 in-rack sprinklers. Question 1) Can this new rack system be supplied from the overhead roof main on system #1? Question 2) If yes, does this new rack system need an extra control valve at floor level at the new racks or can the existing main control valve on the existing roof system #1 be sufficient?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that a control valve is needed for the in-rack sprinklers and also connected to ceiling system #2. The base requirement in Section 8.16.1.6.1 is that separate indicating control valves and drains shall be provided and arranged so that ceiling and in-rack sprinklers can be controlled independently. One exception is the installation of 20 or fewer in-rack sprinklers supplied by any one ceiling sprinkler system shall not require a separate indicating valve by Section 8.16.1.6.2. The other is Section 8.16.1.6.3 where separate indicating valves shall be permitted to be arranged as sectional control valves supplied from the ceiling sprinkler system where in-rack sprinklers are required and the racks including the adjacent aisles occupy 8000 sq. ft. or less of the area protected by the ceiling sprinklers. This new wording clarifies the in-rack system is limited to 8,000 sq. ft. or less and this is to include the adjacent aisle space. The smaller area is the reason for not having to isolate the ceiling sprinklers. This fits your application if a separate indicating control valve is provided for the in-rack sprinklers but the in-rack sprinklers are to be fed from the ceiling sprinkler system #2 rather than ceiling system #1. Although it is not indicated in Chapter 8, Section 23.8.2 for hydraulic calculations for in-rack sprinklers says that the water demand of sprinklers installed in racks shall be added to the ceiling sprinkler water demand over the same protected area at the point of connection. Hose connections in 8.17.5 allow for connections to adjacent systems but not for in-rack sprinklers. The wording is poorly presented since it implies that a valve is required for both the in-racks and the ceiling as required by 8.16.1.6.1. Regarding the control valve, the intent is not to impair the ceiling system while the in-rack sprinkler system is impaired. As such, only one valve is required and that controls the in-rack sprinklers.
