Holes in Wood Joists as Piping Supports
The NFPA 13 standard does allow for holes through solid structural members to
serve
as hangers for the support of system piping in Section 9.1.1.6.3. The spacing of
the supports has to meet spacing and support of Section 9.2.2.1. The location
and
size of the holes permitted are according to applicable building codes.
The International Building Code (IBC) addresses this for solid wood joists in
Section
2308.8.2. Holes bored in joists shall not be within 2 inches of the top or
bottom
of the joist, and the diameter of any such hole shall not exceed one-third the
depth
of the joist. Notches in the top or bottom of joists shall not exceed one-sixth
the depth and shall not be located in the middle third of the span.
The notching and boring allowances that are permitted for solid sawn joist
framing
cannot be applied to engineered wood products. Section 2308.8.2.1 indicates that
cuts, notches and holes bored in engineered wood products such as trusses,
structural
composite lumber, structural glue-laminated members or I-joists are not
permitted.
Exceptions are where permitted by the manufacturer's recommendations or where
the
effects of such alterations are specifically considered in the design of the
member
by a registered design professional. Each manufacturer typically publishes
guidelines
to establish safe notching and boring limitations.
