Sprinklers Inside of Equipment
We are involved with a company that makes large modular computer facilities
where
we install the sprinkler systems in the factory. They will ship the units to
customers
around the country. A large air-handling unit is approximately 15 ft x 15 ft
and
the height is from floor to ceiling. It has doors on it for servicing but the
only
combustibles inside are filters. The AHJ thinks it is a combustible concealed
space
with doors and wants it protected. Is this required?
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that sprinklers within the air-handling unit are not required.
This issue is specifically addressed in the 2013 edition in Section 8.1.1(8)*.
This
section indicates that sprinklers shall not be required to be installed within
electrical
equipment, mechanical equipment, or air handling units not intended for
occupancy.
The annex for this section also says that equipment having access for routine
maintenance
should not be considered as intended for occupancy.
The Handbook provides additional commentary on this subject. This states, "It is
not the intent of 8.1.1(8) to require sprinklers to be installed in air
handling
units (AHUs) or in similar mechanical or electrical equipment. AHUs for large
buildings
and building complexes can be so large that it brings into question whether or
not
sprinklers should be installed inside them. Providing sprinkler protection in
these
units is not practical and would not be overly effective based on the limited
hazard
present.
AHUs that have access panels or "man doors" are not necessarily intended for
occupancy
and should not be treated as such when applying these requirements. Often the
presence
of an access hatch or other means to allow for equipment maintenance is
misconstrued
as allowing occupancy of such a space."
