Walls Terminate Less Than 18 in. Below the Deflector
"I am designing a sprinkler system for a self storage building that has been
specified
as an ordinary hazard Group 1 classification. There are rooms that are only 16
sq. ft. (4 ft x 4 ft). They have walls that are 8 ft above the finished floor
and
1-1/2 in. wide. The deck is 9 ft - 3 in. above the finished floor. The
sprinkler
deflector will be approximately 15 in. above the top of the wall. Table
8.6.5.2.2
indicates it can only be used for light hazard situations. Can the table be
used
for ordinary hazard applications?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is Table 8.6.5.2.2 cannot be used.
Table 8.6.5.2.2 allows sprinkler to be installed above the 18-inch plane below
the
sprinkler deflector. This allows a greater degree of shadowing (water not
reaching
a portion of the floor) so it is limited to the less demanding fire presented by
the light hazard classification. With other classifications, you have to place
the sprinkler such that water is adequately discharged on both sides of the wall
obstruction. There are two means to achieve adequate floor coverage. One means
is to place sprinklers on both sides of the obstructing wall. With such closely
spaced walls this approach can be excessively conservative. Another means is
to
follow the obstruction rules for sprinkler located above solid structural
members
(such as the bottom chord of a joist or a beam). These structural members can
be
up to 8 inches wide (over 4 times wider than the wall) and presents the same
impact
on the discharge pattern as created by the top of your wall. As dictated by
Section
8.6.5.2.1.7, the sprinkler must be located directly over the top of the wall and
the deflector must be at least 6 inches over the top of the wall. This way
adequate
water is discharged to both sides of the wall.
