the defaults for postgresql on debian gave me problems yesterday also.
I have a fresh debian 3.0r0-box, and have installed postgresql via
apt-get.

I had to change the line in /etc/postgresql/pg_hba.conf saying
something like (taken from memory, my box is at home):

host 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.0 ident

I changed 'ident' to 'md5' and now it works. this assumes of course
that your database server and web server are on the same machine.
