Yeah, I think what it boils down to is that the UserID = X filter needs to be 
done *before* the join occurs. And I don't think that can happen without using 
a subquery. I'll write this as a table-valued function in SQL Server, that will 
allow for code reusability, and I don't see any performance problems with the 
subquery. I think I was pushing for a join because they can look more elegant 
or efficient at first glance. :)
