does it really do that?    what happens if you log in to the MySQL
console and just SELECT, or check the length of the actual data, is it
the 10K * 3 characters you put in?   I'm not sure how it would not
warn the data is truncated upon storage, but somehow knows upon query
that it was, it sounds like that's not what's actually happening here,
and it's something else about the query.  can you send me a short
reproduction script?
