If you are referring to Test 1 and Test 2 at http://www.sqlite.org/speed.html, please look again. The transaction-less test (Test 1) only inserts 1000 records, whereas the transaction test (Test 2) inserts 25000 records. So even though the elapse time is a little more for some engines on the second test, they are doing 25 times more work, so they are really quite a bit faster.
