We found that vacuuming the database was also slow. We no longer vaccum the database at all, vaccumming only frees up unused pages, however new additions will re-use the free pages so there is no wastage from not vacuuming. If we need to delete all records from all tables from the database we simply delete the whole file from the filesystem and recreate a new empty one, this is much quicker.
