Most likely, the following is not the cause of your problem, but it's funny: There was once a virus that did a search and replace across the user's hard-drive (back in the DOS days of 20M drives) that changed all occurrences of "Microsoft" to "Macrosoft" or something like that. I wish I remembered the details and/or the virus name. I guess you had to be there.
