Oh, it created one in the cwd, not the place where i thought the DB
should be...
is there a way to turn that 'feature' off, so that i can prevent that
from happening, i'd prefer just an error.

You haven't really opened the database you think you have? What
happens when you do:
SELECT * FROM sqlite_master;
