.NET and Mono on OS X are extremely sensitive to version numbers. So check you're using a long-issued up-to-date installation of Mono, but not one of the bleeding-edge versions which isn't yet the official version. Generally, a particular binary that depends on Mono will state on its download page which versions of Mono it's happy with.
