Wow. I don't know what hard disk hardware or driver you were using originally, but it sucks. Even for data scattered all over a 288Gig file, that's bad. Linux itself is quite efficient at file handling so I'm guessing it's your storage device. Alternatively, you have an incredibly good SSD drive.
