I use *.SQL for text files which contain SQL commands, including the ones the SQLite tool generates from '.dump'. I don't have a good answer about what extension to use for SQLite databases. At the moment I seem to favour using the extension '.sqlite' but I'd be hard pressed to make an argument for it. I wonder what I'll do when SQLite4 comes along. Simon.
