You'll be glad to know that this issue has been raised on this list before. It would require substantial changes to SQLite internals to allow it to always identify the constraint that failed. It's unlikely that this will ever appears in SQLite3. But it's possible that since SQLite4 is a thorough rewrite it may be a feature in SQLite4.
