I'm also running a nightly - v7.9.0, 1440747495, Fri Aug 28 - on an
earlier Mac OS X version (10.7.5) and despite having set the "software
update" preference to not update

I am frequently being asked to update. Worse than that I have noticed
recently that this can have the unhappy side effect that my players no
longer see the server. I have to log onto the server, open System
Preferences, open the Logitech Media Server prefpane, and decline the
update. Sometimes this does not work and I have to kill perl and then
restart LMS.
Should I try a newer nightly, or is there somewhere in the code that I
evan easily comment out the update feature?
