Maybe the problems is actually the up/resampling if you do that in squeezelite you will bodge the HDCD code ? So don't use any of those options . I'm just trying to,find the info where it says squeezelite does HDCD ? Is this on Windows only ?
HDCD was a sort of stop gap thing it has roughly as many titles as SACD ( not that many ) but as dither algorithms got better after the 90's and widely used and understood no one bothers to produce hdcd' anymore . You get good soundquality anyway with good s/n ratio and resolution enough for any practical purpose ( if the record producers want it , which they don't on modern recordings :( ) But on the other hand the few CD there is works best HDCD decoded , as this encoding was not perfectly transparent to the 16 bit data so if you have many HDCD you should resolve the issue in some way . It's is however a bit uncommon with a functioning HDCD decoder .
