Was there anything specific in 7.9 that might have improved search response times from a standing start?
A lot has changed wrt. searches in 7.9. First of all it's now using a fulltext search index. I'm not sure whether this helps with performance or not. But there is improved caching, some optimizations to the SQL queries, too.
