It might be worth checking the notifications settings (if you haven't already done so)
- right-click on an empty bit of the taskbar and choose settings - scroll down to the hyperlink which states 'Select which icons appear in the taskbar' - usually the default setting is that everything is switched on with the button at the top As you will see on this settings screen, you can choose each or any of the icons individually and it might be worth having a tweak of the settings and then set it back to default to try and give Windows a nudge in the right direction.
