Just to add a little more to this tale......my intent here is that I'm adding an LCD to my Pi with track info, etc. No new ground. Did this yesterday, got it all working and took it home to update (limited hotspot data) and the Raspbian update broke it.
I took this older install that didn't have LCD configured on it (HD44780 driver, which by the way was a PITA on a Pi3 and latest Raspbian) and then got that working. LMS and LCD working perfectly. I made an image of the card and then rebooted and upgraded WHICH THEN BROKE LMS. The card is a 16GB card, resized with raspi-config.
