Reviving this just because after all of this time of not being able to do simple searches, I found out completely by accident what is keeping me from doing searches: the "Full text search" plugin. I disabled it last night for a completely different issue and for the first time in almost two years, the simpler method (and more responsive for me, anyway) of searching now works. If anyone else has this problem, that would be the first thing I would try: disable that plugin. YMMV
