As I have only recently learned, Android puts processes to "sleep" when the screen is off meaning that i.a. WiFi is stopped. Processes can work around this (I think this is called "Wakelock", at least on my LineageOS Android 8). So, maybe ConnectBot does and stays alive, but the "ssh" process does not?
