I followed the method outlined here -- https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?112802-How-to-change-perl-files-of-LMS-in-piCorePlayer -- removed the symlink, and put a copy of the HTTP.pm file in it's place that I could edit. You will probably still need to use sudo to edit & save your change.
I don't know how comprehensive the piCorePlayer backup function is.
