Thanks all. Overwrote max2play with piCore running LMS and things are back to normal (still need to finish tweaking options and plugins). I do like that piCore survives non-graceful shutdowns and appears to have good provision for backing up LMS settings.
Not using piCore Player at the moment, but now thinking again about getting a HiFiBerry or Allo HAT for my other RPi as a possible replacement for one of my SBs.
