That's the first thing I tried, and it had the opposite effect of what I wanted - with the bridge doing the transcoding everything had a gap.
I'm guessing that the issue is the bridge is delivering the file at a rate such that the crossfader can't analyze it, but for the life of my I don't understand why it won't work. If I take LMS out of the equation and just put mp3s and flacs directly in Foobar2000, they crossfade each other flawlessly. If I use LMS, the flacs work exactly the same and work perfectly, but mp3s either play all the way to the file end with no fading, or drop audio early (i.e., suddenly end near the finish of the song) and skip to the next file.
