deleted when orphaned through an update scan or will they persist when browsing albums and tracks, necessitating a Clear Library & Rescan Everything type scan?
The scanner tries to clean up. But there will always be bugs :-). I believe 8.3 has improved quite a bit in this regard. But you will tell me whether it works for you or not...
