If you want to use mp3tunes you would be fine if you used dbpoweramp or
EAC to rip mp3's at a high variable bit rate. A vast majority of people
can't tell the difference between original source material and a 190
vbs lame mp3.  If you were to go to something over 220kbs you would
have to have exceptional and vary rare ears and an extremely quiet
listening area and you would have to be trying very intently to hear
any difference and you would also need to have very good equipment. 
Unless you're just jaded against Mp3 take a bit of time and hop over to
www.hydrogenaudio.org and investigate this a bit.  Also look into the
new version of dbpoweramp as it does everything that the ripstation
software does and much more in a secure ripper.
