I should start by saying that I don't use the podcast features of SN or SC, so I can't help with that approach.
Instead, I use Itunes and/or Juice to obtain podcasts. Between the two, Itunes does a better job of aggregating available content, but it has certain idiosyncracies I find annoying. Juice works better, but is "slightly" less easy. Just slightly, because for sure it is easy to use. I have these drop the files into a subdirectory of my music directory, so that all podcast sound files are available to listen to on my squeezebox when I choose to listen to them - Kind of like a Tevo for radio programs.
