When you use SN, you are connected to SN for "command and control" only.
The data stream (ie, audio) comes directly from the provider.

Ie, if you listen to live365, the volume control and dislay and such
are between your SB and SN. The audio, however, comes from Live365 and
goes nowhere near Squeeznetwork/Mysqueezebox.

I believe you are mistaken about Reciva's topology. The only globally
distributed connections they provide are to their web server and
database.. ie, the database which converts your radio station into the
stream address.

I see nothing that says they provide the streams themselves, just a
'matchmaking' service to look up urls of streams.

My bet is that your reciva radio has a larger buffer than whatever SB
device you're using provides.
