I wouldn't disagree with your thought process at all.  However, to save
power, size, weight and cost, netbooks make trade offs in almost every
area, compared to PC's.  Make sure the laptop you purchase is up to the
job by exploring commentary from users who have gone down the same road,
and you should be in good shape.  Not every portable is a good choice.
