I think of it more like this (using your analogy).

We are all viewing a photo of the mono lisa.  All the photos are off
just a bit due to limitations of the camera, the colors slightly
altered.  Then someone finds out how to fix the camera so we get a
pristine copy of the mono lisa.  I want to see the one with the original
colors, not the photo that has been given to us over all the years.
