Couple ideas. <warning>I haven't proved any of these</warning>

1.e-Directory for Linux seems the best way to integrate the Linux box
authentication to an existing NDS tree.

2.Have you seen how smbauth works? It asks for a username/password
combination and then tries to login to the M$ network and retrieve a
little file. If it can accomplish this, means that the combination is
correct. What about installing a Novell client on Linux that does the
same? Say a little test file in /sys/?
