Yes - that was the problem.  I didn't realise that the RedHat RPMS had
not enabled -with-winbind-auth-challenge.  Installed Samba from source
and it worked fine :-)

I hadn't thought of that - that can be a big gotcha if you 
don't install Samba from source.

I know from experience that the Samba RPMs in RedHat 7.3 
won't support challenge-response authentication.

Ken, how are you installing Samba?
