But what puzzles me is that Firefox and IE ask for a proxy password again and again, everytime they have been restarted, although I told them to save it.

Works for me with all browsers I have tried having the "save password" function.

Since it occurs with 2 different applications I don't believe in a bug in the browsers, rather than missconfiguration of my Squid. What could be wrong?

Not very much, but you can try enabling "log_mime_hdrs" and look for what your browsers is sending to Squid.

Ok, here are the first 2 entries, with TCP_DENIED and the first TCP_MISS:

1095750382.531 62 217.165.2.125 TCP_DENIED/407 1748 GET http://heise.de/ - NONE/- text/html [Host: heise.de\r\nUser-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de-DE; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040803 Firefox/0.9.3\r\nAccept: text/xml,application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9,text/plain;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5\r\nAccept-Language: de-de,de;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.5,en;q=0.3\r\nAccept-Encoding: gzip,deflate\r\nAccept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7\r\nKeep-Alive: 300\r\nProxy-Connection: keep-alive\r\n] [HTTP/1.0 407 Proxy Authentication Required\r\nServer: squid/2.5.STABLE6\r\nMime-Version: 1.0\r\nDate: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 07:06:22 GMT\r\nContent-Type: text/html\r\nContent-Length: 1297\r\nExpires: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 07:06:22 GMT\r\nX-Squid-Error: ERR_CACHE_ACCESS_DENIED 0\r\nProxy-Authenticate: Basic realm="Squid proxy-caching web server"\r\n\r]

1095750385.364 957 217.165.2.125 TCP_MISS/302 500 GET http://heise.de/ xgmde DIRECT/193.99.144.80 text/html [Host: heise.de\r\nUser-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de-DE; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040803 Firefox/0.9.3\r\nAccept: text/xml,application/xml,application/xhtml+xml,text/html;q=0.9,text/plain;q=0.8,image/png,*/*;q=0.5\r\nAccept-Language: de-de,de;q=0.8,en-us;q=0.5,en;q=0.3\r\nAccept-Encoding: gzip,deflate\r\nAccept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7\r\nKeep-Alive: 300\r\nProxy-Connection: keep-alive\r\nProxy-Authorization: Basic eVdtZfU8MTAsNzgzZmwv\r\n] [HTTP/1.1 302 Found\r\nDate: Tue, 21 Sep 2004 07:06:25 GMT\r\nServer: Apache/1.3.29 (Unix)\r\nLocation: http://www.heise.de/\r\nConnection: close\r\nContent-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1\r\n\r]

(I slightly altered the password hash value)
The browser is Firefox 0.9.3 with save password enables. The password dialog pops up everytime I closed all the browser windows and open a new one and try to connect to a internet site. I just hin enter because all the data is already filled in, but it's bugging anyways.

Thanks,
Florian
