For what it's worth, scalar.awk (http://scalar.risk.az/) has very good
reporting of the size of hits, and the output is suitable for including
in an email. Grab a copy, optionally edit the script and set all
reporting options to "no" except "count_obj_size" and run your
access.log past it.
