Can set cache_dir with a memory filesystem.

So it's not possible to just tell squid to store the cache items in ram without using a ramdisk?

Yes. Squid has it's own built-in ramdisk equivalent for memory caching the most popular or recent objects.

It's size is defined by the cache_mem setting which may be used with or without the disk caching.

To run diskless:

* 3.0 and numerically lower there is a "null" disk type to set on cache_dir line and override the default 100MB on-disk cache.

* 3.1+ have no such default on-disk so removing all cache_dir lines is the same end result.
