Running 2 squid instances really isn't hard. Somewhere at work I have the configs we used to use - before we went to IDENT auth - I could probably dig them out for you if that would help.
Actually, you are correct- it didn't turn out to be that hard, afterall. Now I have two running, using separate caches and config files, calling two separate squidguards with two separate config files and a shared database (whew). The nightmare part was hacking /etc/init.d/squid it isn't pretty, but it works.
I threw out the IDENT method when I saw someone on the net say that squid does not cache IDENT information. That would generate tons of IDENT traffic for every page requested! Throw in the fact that I would have to edit config files on the machine for each user change and.... well, no thanks!
Thanks to all of you again for your assistance. I might have given up had I not heard from SOMEONE saying it would be possible, even if it would be ugly.
