I'm not sure how you are logging in with a username that is not in your MySQL database of email users. You must be doing something non-standard? The best way to accomplish what you appear to be doing is use the Virtual Host Plugin, which lets you log in with "john" where your real username will be automatically constructed from the URL of the login page to be something like "[EMAIL PROTECTED]".
