[SM-USERS] User .pref and .abook files

Greetings,

I am curious about the storage of user .pref and .abook files. Currently mine are all in /var/www/hmtl/webmail/data. I would like for them to be stored in the home directory of my users, is there any way squirrelmail to do this? What is the reasoning behind storing them all in one directory?
I'm sure this is probably a FAQ, but I haven't found an answer for it yet.
