SquirrelMail 1.3.3 devel (see cvs snapshots on http://www.squirrelmail.org/download.php) has rewritten header parsers. Probably they are quicker and because you are dealing with a header with 500 addresses I'm interested how the devel branche handles that message on your server. Could you try to test the devel branche (unset the non core plugins and the admin plugin in conf.pl) and let us know if this solves your problem?
