  Basically the statement meant that you didn't need to try using SSL
  between the mail server and SquirrelMail if they are running on the
  same server.  Although you can still use it if you are accessing the
  site over HTTP, so that your HTTP traffic is encrypted.

  In what way? It failed authentication? What authentication method?
