  From a stab in the dark, the username or password is incorrect. This
  could be because of a typo, or somehow the characters are becoming
  messed up somewhere between SquirrelMail and the IMAP server. Is
  there any particular events that make this occur? Could you run a
  packet sniffer such as ethereal and try listening in on the packets
  so you can see what is really being sent? (note as you're using
  localhost you may need to change your IMAP properties in
  SquirrelMail to make that work).
