Not necessarily, and it might even make the mail system less secure. 
Unless you are running cgi on the web server (and of course assuming you 
have all pprograms and apps kept up to date with the latest CERT 
advisories), then the webserver should be fairly secure.

The mail server is as secure as the program(s) you are using for MTA, MDA 
and SMTP, and the user access you allow. If you forward mail via SMTP from 
remote sites or have POP/IMAP logins in plain text, this is a possible 
security issue. OTOH, using SM, you can run mail delivery/retrieval 
through ssl and do away with about 90% of the known password-related 
security issues.
