Jonathan,Hello Luc, On Monday, January 13, 2003, Luc Brouard wrote...What it is said in the FAQ is not that using Maildir is "sacrificing the performance & robustness and other things..." for every implementation ...Could it be that they mean patching UW-IMAP to support Maildir is sacrificing performance and robustness? As I said, I've found Maildir access to be a lot quicker than mbox style files that UW-IMAP uses.
I just made this point because I thought there was confusion on this. From the original mail that is what I understood. ie. UW-IMAP patched to work with maildir will not be as fast as UW-IMAP working with mbox. And it certainely does not mean that courier-imap is slower.
I am using courier-imap by the way and for my use it is better than uw-imap mbox.
I think Maildir is better than Maildir for my use ... but I think that mbox style mailstore is great to backup things you will not look at it often (ie. ml archives for examples). As it is not my use (I delete every mail from the ml I'm on, except if the mail is particulary helpful or delves onto something I would like to work later on).
Because with Maildir, except on reiserfs, you could go out of inodes.
Cheers
Luc
