You can contact the IMAP server by hand to be sure it is reachable and
running.

telnet <imap-server> imap
a1 login <username> <password>
a2 logout

Replace <bracketed> text with your values.  If this much works, there
are additional imap commands you can try, but I don't have them
memorized.
