An Active Directory environment doesn't have a Domain Controller, but some functional 
equivalents that are not very friendly to the query strings I tried (also tried 
null-query as you described).

Exchange 5.5 seems to be a lot easier to interoperate than Exchange 2000, for all of 
the list archives I've looked at.
